Morning view over the Meseta

This was my first morning of walking alone on the Camino. I headed out before daylight with my torch (flashlight) searching out the Camino signs in the dark. Somehow it no longer felt like a holiday. Perhaps the lack of distractions of talking and laughing made me focus on new pains in my body. My mind was searching for something to latch on to so instead I chose to take in my surroundings. The landscape has changed and while there is a feeling of desolation, I still find it very beautiful in the Meseta.

I did connect later in the day with Nick and other friends I had met back in Saint Jean-Pied-de-Port and along the way. We stayed in a town called Castrojeriz. It was a lovely small town complete with a central plaza (most towns of any moderate size have one), Castle ruins and underground cellars that we visited. We stayed in a private Alberque and were woken in the morning with Gregorian chants.

I will post more photos later when I have a stronger signal.

  1. It is great following your adventures. A third of the way….already a great accomplishment. Now that Christine has left, it will be interesting to hear of your journey with a more self/inner focus. Thanks for sharing. Keep the insights coming!
