The Land Down Under

This is from a view point on the way to the lighthouse in Bryon Bay.

My trip to Australia was very short but extremely enjoyable. I hadn’t planned to go to Australia from New Zealand but since it’s SO close and it had been about 30 years since I was there last, I figured why not?

Given the fact that winter was quickly approaching, I decided to stick to the east coast and focus on Queensland and a bit of New South Wales. I met up with a friend, Michelle, from the IIN course (Intitute of Integrative Nutrition) that I did online in 2012. We became friends on Skype and have stayed in touch. It was so much fun to actually meet her in person. She lives in Brisbane with her partner and their adorable 7-year old daughter, Shallanya. I made Brisbane my base while I explore north of Brisbane into central Queensland and south of Brisbanne in and around Bryon Bay.

I went to Yeppoon in central Queensland to meet and stay with my mom’s first cousin, Loren (apparently my first cousin once removed) and his wife, Sallie. I had a wonderful visit and I stayed with them for about 6 days. I threatened to stay longer because I liked it so much. They moved from the US to Australia in 1971 for a teaching position and decided to stay and make Australia their home.

From Yeppoon, I got a train and a bus a few hours south to a beautiful place called Agnes Water which is right next to Town 1770. I had a wonderful relaxing 3-4 days there. My host, Ian, from the Airbnb I stayed in, took me to some wonderful spots to explore. I saw amazing sunsets, sunrises and beautiful secluded beaches. I was able to get my cooking fix while staying there which always a bonus to be able to make your own food while traveling.

From Agnes Water, I headed via Brisbane, to Byron Bay. I thought I had been there 30 years ago but unless my memory fails me or it has gotten that much bigger, I don’t believe I did visit there. I loved the area, town and overall vibe of Byron Bay. I stayed a bit out from the center so it was quiet but also an easy walk along the beach into town. I did more walking and running, some kayaking and ate some pretty amazing food!

I used my time in Byron to recharge my batteries; my body, mind and spirit. I knew I’d need to feel rested and energized before heading to Vietnam.

How great that you have relatives in Queensland (once removed)! And cousins are the best!! Some of the chefs in Byron Bay need to come to California. The food looks super amazing! Traveling is certainly agreeing with you- you look healthier and younger than ever! Keep having fun and stay safe! xox Alice
